The massive boom in recent years of online poker has made it very possible for people to make a living online. As a former casino employee, and part time poker player i have come across a good number of such people.
In this article i'm not going to talk about poker itself - their are countless books and websites devoted to strategy. I'm going to talk about the different poker formats you can play online, and the types of players that are more suited to these formats. Hopefully this will give you an idea of how best to use your strengths to consistently win money online.
For simplicity's sake, assume i'm talking about no limit hold 'em, as this is by far the game with the greatest number of players - meaning more people whose money you can win. However the online sites offer most other games as well including limit, pot limit, RAZZ, omaha etc.
The different poker formates you can play - tournament or cash
Online poker can be split in to cash games or tournaments. While the rules are exactly the same, the style of play needed to succeed differs.
Cash poker, or ring games as they are known, is the traditional form of the game where you sit down at a table with your buy-in and play. You can leave at any time, and if you run out of chips you can load yourself up with more.
Tournament poker is the form of the game that has created the huge interest in the game that we see today, due to the massive prize money that can be won.
For a nominal entry fee you are given a starting amount of chips, and your goal is to keep accumulating chips for as long as you can, to the point where you are in-the-money and beyond. There are certain tournaments that allow you to buy back in during the first hour, but in general once your chips are gone so are you.
Make A Living Playing Cash Games Online
This type of poker is suited to players who need to see money coming in consistently. Over the long run a good poker player will win, but more than that they will be able to calculate their rate of return...and will be able to translate this in to the equivalent of an hourly wage. They will know that if they sit down at a certain game they will win an average of $X for every hour they play.
Cash games online allow good poker players more of an opportunity to use their poker skills to their advantage.
TELLS - even though you can't see the players, cash games give you a greater chance to work out a players online tells and use them to your advantage.
PLAYER KNOWLEDGE - most poker sites give players the ability to take notes on players which they can refer back to next time they come across them. You can also note certain players who are easy to beat and check if they are online when you are - they become the gift that keeps on giving.
CONSISTENT GOOD PLAY REWARDED - in the long run the cream will rise to the top. So if your game is in good shape, the money will come.
There are a number of websites that rate the various poker sites in terms of where you can find the easiest games. Sites that are receiving a lot of new players will generally have many players that are just dipping their toes in to the water - why not help them with their education.
Within the cash game format you can choose to play at tables with 9 or 6 players or you can play heads up. The tighter you are as a player the more players you will want at your table.
Make A Living Playing Online Poker Tournaments
Personally i am a big fan of tournament poker. I love the feeling at the start of a tournament where you know that if you play well and stick to your plan, there is the possibility of a large payout.
Tournaments can be divided in to those with unlimited players and smaller tournaments known as sit & go (SNG) tournaments. Different skills are required for each.
The larger tournaments allow you a little more time. Blinds increase at a slower pace and you have a full table for the majority of the tournament. You can play tighter for longer but there still comes a stage when the blinds are getting higher that you will need to loosen up your play. The downside is that with the larger number of players, there is always going to be the need for some luck if you are to make it deep in to the tournament.
SNG's are an internet phenomenon. They require a unique skill set that the majority of poker players don't have which means they offer huge opportunities for making a living if you understand the format and know how to exploit it.
The SNG format begins with a set number of players eg 9, 18, 45 etc and moves at a quicker pace than large tournaments. You need to have the skills to play at both full tables and short handed if you are to succeed. You need to be be able to use position to your advantage as often as you can.
Much like cash games, a good SNG player will be able to tell you their percentages over the long run for wins and places. So this format definitely suits the player who wants the money to come in regularly and who is able to change the pace of their game as it progresses. Their are many players who makes their living playing these poker games online
Choose Your Path
Of the various formats mentioned here, the SNG's probably offer the greatest opportunity to make a good living playing poker online. There are a couple of reasons for this.
* There is no real world equivalent - the format has sprung up as an internet game, meaning it is not as well understood as the other formats. This offers the player with the best understanding of the format a HUGE advantage over his competitors.
* Money in the bank - you don't have to wait weeks or months for a win as you do with larger tournaments.
* Length of time - the running time for these tournaments is much less than for larger tournaments meaning you can fit your poker in around your current job until you feel that your skills are at a standard where you can play full time.
Like anything, being able to win consistently at SNG's requires the willingness to learn the skills required and the discipline to put what you have learned in to practice. If the desire and dedication is there, the rewards will follow soon after.
